Have you heared about Daihuku? Daifuku is a sweet originated in Japan. It shapes like a palm size ball. Outside skin is smooth and soft rice cake called mochi and red bean paste, cream or some fillings are inside of the mochi. It tastes so much sweet and the texture is jiggly and fluffy.
Yoroken 養老軒
There are many daifuku around Japan, but I share you one of the most delicous daifuku shop “Yoroken 養老軒” from Gifu prefecture. Yoroken is a Japanese confectionery store that sells many kinds of Daifuku, roll cakes, cream caramel or Dorayaki it’s a kind of red bean pancakes. The main store is in Gifu prefecrure but there are four branches in Aichi, Gifu and Osaka.
Fruits Daifuku ふるーつ大福
Usually only red bean pastes are inside the Daifuku. However a “Fruits Daifuku” from Yoroken has many kinds of fillings. One strawberry, banana, red bean paste, chestnut and whipped cream are inside a fluffy rice cake.
The most feature point is the skin. Skin is made from mochi that is a sweet rice cake. Every daifuku’s skin is made from mochi so that the texture is namely soft and springy.
But the skin of Fruits Daifuku from Yoroken is extremely smooth and fluffy but surprisingly chewy!!
Furthermore, the inside whipped cream is also soft. It makes the texture more jiggly and fluffy.
Daifuku with cranberry and nuts
One of the different flavor is Daifuku with cranberry and nuts. This is also delicious. It’s sweet and sour because of the inside cranberry and whole red bean paste. And the inside nuts give you an interesting texture.
Daifuku with chestnut paste 栗きんとん
Gifu prefecture is famous for Kuri kinton くりきんとん. It’s a Japanese confectionery that form sweet smooth chestnut paste into beautiful shape. It’s sweet and good for souvenir.
The Kuri kinton and whole red bean paste are inside a Daifuku. The whole bean has a great presence for the texture.
Summary
Daifuku is very familiar for Japanese people from long time ago. And you can find many Daifuku around Japan. However Daifuku from Yoroken is very unique and surprisingly delicious. It’s not well known even for Japanese people but it should be and will be!
