As you know, most famous Japanese food is sushi that is a slice of raw fish on the bite-sized vinegared race ball seasoned with soy sauce and Japanese horseradish called wasabi in Japanese. I’ve heard the foreign style sushi is not like Japanese style though it’s like a rolled sushi.
Japanese people eat raw fish as several styles not only sushi. I’m going to share how to eat raw fish in Japan!
Just raw fish
There is a dish that is just thinly sliced seafood shapes rectangle called “sashimi” in Japanese. We have them with soy sauce. You can taste straight the natural flavor of the ingredients. We eat tuna, salmon, mackerel, seabream, yellowtail, flounder, some clams, shrimp, squid, octopus, scallop and more as sashimi.
The sashimi of tuna and salmon are a little oily for good meaning so they go well with rice. Japanese sake made from rice so that sashimi goes well with Japanese sake as well. In addition sashimi is very healthy because it’s uncooked just the original ingredient!
Sushi
As you know we love sushi so much and there are so many sushi restaurants in Japan. Sushi is a slice raw fish on bite-sized vinegared rice ball. Generally you can eat sushi just one bite with soy sauce.
Have you heard about a conveyor belt sushi? It’s a type of sushi restaurant, sushi are served on revolving counter. When the sushi you want revolves around, you pick up one of them and have it! In addition conveyor belt type sushi is not so expensive, usually sushi restaurant is a little expensive though.
Sushi roll
There are several types of sushi in Japan but I choose sushi roll here.
The ingredients of rolled sushi are some raw fish, cucumber, avocado, omelet and more. The ingredients are rolled in a layer of vinegared rice with seaweed into the shape of a thick bar. Usually it’s cut into 2 centimeters in width and served like a roll cake.
Seafoods on rice
There are many rice bowl dish called Don in Japan. For example the beef rice bowl it ‘s a bowl of rice topped with cooked beef, the tempura rice bowl it’s a bowl of rice topped with deep-fried seafood and vegetables on top and more and more.
Of course sea food goes well with rice so much. We have also seafood rice bowl it’s a bowl of rice topped with many kinds of seafood on top like tuna, salmon, shrimp, squid. You can taste a lot of flavor of seafood in one dish.
We also have a seafood rice bowl topped with just one kind of seafood on top. You can taste only your favorite ingredients in bowl. The salmon rice bowl and the tuna rice bawl are famous in Japan.
Summary
As I say Japanese people eat a lot of raw fish as several kinds of style. But please do not forget to eat raw fish with Japanese horseradish called wasabi. As you know it’s spicy but it’s not like a jalapeno or pepper, it goes straight to your nose and stings your nose! Of course you can eat it with sushi or seafood rice bowl anything you want. I love to eat wasabi with beef steak by the way.
Japanese raw fish are very fresh even at the supermarket. When you visit Japan, you cant try assorted raw fish!
