There are some typical Japanese sweets like “Ohagi おはぎ” it’s a rice ball covered with sweet red bean paste and “Dango だんご” it’s a rice dumpling with sauce made of sweet soy sauce and so on. However Japanese rice cracker is the most common Japanese snack I guess because you can buy it at any supermarkets or convenience store in Japan and it’s very reasonable!!
I’m going to share two kinds of rice crackers today.
potapota yaki
There are many kinds of rice crackers in Japan but ”Potapota yaki ぽたぽた焼き” has been around for a ling time and most Japanese people know it and have had it. You will never get tired of it even if you eat it so many times. It tastes sweet and salty but not only that!! The texture is crunchy and crispy but it’s no too much. It’s very interesting to chew it. Potapota yaki is filled with a good flavor of roasted soy sauce and tastes sweet from sugar.
It shapes circle with a diameter of about seven centimeters and is about five millimeters in thickness. Contains 10 bags and each bag contains 2 pieces. I mention again that you will not be enough even if you eat two pieces of them. You can not help yourself from eating them!
On the other hand, Kamedaseika 亀田製菓 that sales this Potapota yaki has other delicious and fascinating snacks. When you visit Japan, you can try them.
Potato corocoro
Next snack is a little different from rice cracker but it’s crispy and more tough than rice cracker. This kind of rice cracker is called “Okaki おかき” in Japan.
Rice cracker is grilled when it’s cooked, however Okaki is deep fried when it’s cooked. That’s why Okaki is more hard to chew.
Potato corocoro is one of Okaki and a regional snack of Hokkaido where is north of Japan. Hokkaido is famous for delicious food like ramen, sushi, and the ingredients are fresh and delicious for fertile land like corn, potato and more.
This potato corocoro is mainly made of rice and potato. There are several flavors of potato corocoro, this picture is a corn flavor but there are a butter soy sauce flavor, a curry flavor, salt flavor and more.
The more you chew them, the more taste spreads throughout your mouth because this snacks is made of not only rice but also potato.
In addition, Okaki is a little hard to chew but the shape is smaller than the rice cracker so that it’s easy to eat!! And it goes very with beer too!!
This potato corocoro is sold at “Hori” that is a confectionary company in Hokkaido and famous for the melon jelly! It’s also so much delicious!!
Summary
The rice cracker and Okaki have the long expiration dates and they are very light so they are good for souvenir.
To look around the snack corner at Japanese supermarket is extremely fun!
