Japanese box lunch culture “Bento”

What do yo eat for lunch when you outside? Do you go to restaurant or buy anything to eat at a store? There are a custom in Japan you bring a lunch box contains rice, side dish and some fruits for lunch to eat it at office, school anywhere you want. I often bring lunch box to the park and eat it with my family after playing outside.
There are several kinds of lunch boxes in Japan. Furthermore lunch box meal is called “Bento” in Japanese.

Normal homemade dishes in Japan

First I’m going to share a typical Japanese homemade food. As you know we have steamed rice and miso soup for almost every meal and we also prepare some side dishes. By the way I cooked a steamed chestnut rice with autumn season, a miso soup full of ingredients and a rolled omelet.

Usually boxed lunch contains some normal Japanese food or leftover from last night. However there are so many kinds of boxed lunch like a sushi lunch box, a rice ball lunch box, of course we have sandwich lunch box.

Lunch box for school

You need to prepare a boxed lunch several times at school or kindergarten in Japan. And kids are so excited to bring lunch box that is made by their mother.

I put my daughter’s favorites and did my best to make it look pretty.

Box lunch from restaurant

After corona circumstances, many restaurants serve a boxed meal for taking out because people avoid eating food in the restaurant. People prefer taking them out instead of eating them in.
Of course the boxed lunch at the restaurant is a little expensive but you can taste the same dishes to the food eaten in the restaurant. Additionally there are a lot of ingredients in it.

Box lunch at the airport

You can find so many boxed dishes are sold at the airport or station. When you take a long distance train, you sometimes buy a boxed lunch at the station and eat it in the train. This is a real pleasure of train travel! And you can buy the regional boxed lunch at each station!
In the case of air travel, you can also find the regional boxed lunch!
I’m going to share some boxed lunches from New Chitose Airport. The airport is located in north of Japan and it’s famous for seafood so that the seafood boxed lunches are sold there. In addition a boxed lunch sold at the airport called “Soraben そらべん” in Japanese.

This soraben picture is salmon roe and baked salmon on vinegared rice.

The second soraben is sea urchin, salmon roe, seaweed, crab and some thin sliced egg on vinegared rice. It was soo delicious!

Summary

There are so many kinds of lunch boxes in Japan like big size, pretty character printed, double stacked lunch boxes and some lunch boxes can contain soup and it can keep warm the soup for several hours!
When you visit Japan, you can enjoy soraben too!
