There are many typical Japanese food like sushi, ramen, natto and more. Have you ever had a Japanese noodle called “soba” before? Soba is also one of the typical Japanese food and it has been around for a very long time in Japan.

Soba

Soba is made with buckwheat and wheat flour. And you can eat it cool or hot. A cool soba is called Zaru soba that is served just boiled noodle on a plate and a cup of dipping sauce with some condiments such as wasabi, thinly sliced scallions and dried seaweed.
A hot soba is called “Kake soba” in Japanese. The noodles are served in hot beautiful translucent soup with some ingredients on it.

How to eat a noodle in Japan

Surprisingly when many Japanese people eat noodle like ramen, udon and soba, they make slurping sounds and it’s not rude here. Rather, the slurping sounds make Japanese people feel delicious. Be careful! You can make sound just only when you slurp noodles!!

SOBA-yu

You will have soba-yu after eating soba noodle at the restaurant for free. Soba-yu is a hot water that is left in the pot after boiling soba noodle in the kitchen. Soba-yu is served in a small pot like the picture.

There are some leftover dipping soup in your cup after eating soba noodle. You pour some soba-yu in the leftover dipping soup and drink it like a hot Japanese tea.

Soba is rich in nutrients such as protein, vitamin V1,polyphenols and more. Some proteins melt into soba-yu when it boiled so that the soba-yu is thicker and cloudy white. As same as soba noodle, soba-yu is rich in nutrients. You can get all nutrients of soba as well to drink soba-yu.

Summary

You may come up with sushi or ramen when you think of Japanese food. But try to remember Soba noodle and try to eat it when you come to Japan!! Do not forget to taste the soba-yu after eating soba noodle!!
