Freshly cooked Japanese rice is soft, fluffy, and slightly sticky, with each grain holding its shape beautifully. It’s one of the reasons Japanese meals taste so satisfying.
In Japan, almost every household owns a rice cooker and uses it to cook rice every day. But did you know there are four main types of Japanese rice cookers?
In this guide, I’ll compare each type, explain the pros and cons, and help you find the one that’s right for you.
If you are curious about Japanese food, let’s check out my post where I share about “Onigiri”.
Japanese rice cookers are generally divided into four categories:
Microcomputer (Micom)
IH (Induction Heating)
Pressure IH
Gas Rice Cookers
Each type uses a different heating method, which affects the taste, texture, cooking performance, and price.
Micom (Microcomputer) Rice Cookers
Micom rice cookers are the most basic and affordable type. They use a heating plate located at the bottom of the inner pot to cook the rice.
Although they don’t produce as much heat as IH models, they cook small amounts of rice well and are easy to operate. Their lower price also makes them a great choice for beginners, first-time buyers, or people living alone.
However, when cooking larger batches, the heat may not spread evenly, which can lead to inconsistent results.
While Micom rice cookers are affordable, they’re not the type most Japanese families use. If you visit a typical Japanese home, you’ll usually find either an IH or a Pressure IH rice cooker, as these models cook rice more evenly and bring out its natural sweetness.
IH (Induction Heating) Rice Cookers
IH rice cookers use electromagnetic induction to heat the entire inner pot instead of just the bottom.
Because the heat is stronger and more evenly distributed, they produce fluffy, evenly cooked rice with a better texture. They can also precisely control the cooking temperature, making them suitable for different varieties of rice.
Although they cost more than Micom models, they’re an excellent choice if you want noticeably better-tasting rice while keeping the price reasonable.
Pressure IH Rice Cookers
Pressure IH rice cookers combine induction heating with pressure cooking technology.
The added pressure allows the rice to cook at a higher temperature, bringing out its natural sweetness, stickiness, and chewy texture. These models are usually found in the premium price range and are popular among people who want the best possible bowl of Japanese rice.
If you’re serious about rice quality, this is the type to consider.
Gas Rice Cookers
Gas rice cookers use a direct gas flame instead of electricity.
Their powerful heat cooks rice quickly and gives it a slightly different flavor and aroma that many Japanese restaurants prefer. However, they require a gas connection, so they aren’t practical for every home.
Although gas rice cookers are still available, I’ve never actually seen one in a Japanese home. Most families I know use either an IH or a Pressure IH rice cooker instead.

Top 3 Japanese Rice Cookers Overall
Since IH and Pressure IH rice cookers are by far the most popular choices in Japan, we’ll focus on the best models in these two categories.
1. Zojirushi NW-QAC10 – Best Overall IH Rice Cooker
The Zojirushi NW-QAC10 is an excellent choice if you want authentic Japanese rice without stepping up to a premium Pressure IH model. It combines advanced cooking technology with easy maintenance, making it perfect for everyday use.
Its advanced IH (Induction Heating) system generates high heat and precisely controls the cooking temperature throughout the entire process. This allows every grain of rice to cook evenly, resulting in soft, fluffy rice with a delicious texture.
🥦 2. More Than Just a Rice Cooker
The NW-QAC10 also includes a steaming function, so you can easily steam vegetables and other healthy dishes. It’s a convenient way to prepare a complete meal using just one appliance.
✨ 3. Easy to Clean with a Double Non-Stick Coating
This is my favorite feature.
Many rice cookers become less non-stick after years of use, causing rice to stick to the inner pot. Not only does this make cleaning more difficult, but scraping the rice off the pot can also crush the perfectly cooked grains.
The NW-QAC10 features a Double Non-Stick Coating, which helps prevent rice from sticking and makes cleanup much easier. It keeps your rice looking as good as it tastes.
If you’re looking for an IH rice cooker that delivers fluffy rice, is easy to maintain, and is built for everyday use, the Zojirushi NW-QAC10 is one of the best choices available.
If you’re looking for an IH rice cooker that offers excellent performance at a reasonable price, the Tiger JPW-H10U is a fantastic choice. It combines Tiger’s rice-cooking technology with simple maintenance, making it ideal for everyday use.
🍚 1. Thick Inner Pot for Fluffy, Evenly Cooked Rice
The Far-Infrared Black Thick Inner Pot features a two-layer metal construction that heats up quickly and efficiently. Its far-infrared coating distributes heat and moisture evenly to every grain of rice, creating fluffy, tender rice with a pleasantly chewy texture.
🧼 2. Incredibly Easy to Clean
This is one of Tiger’s biggest advantages.
Only two parts need to be washed after cooking—the inner pot and the inner lid. The flat top surface also wipes clean in seconds, making everyday maintenance quick and hassle-free.
✨ 3. Brings Out the Best Flavor in Your Rice
Tiger designed this rice cooker to enhance everything that makes Japanese rice delicious—its natural sweetness, soft texture, aroma, stickiness, and springy bite. The result is rice that tastes fresh, flavorful, and satisfying with every meal.
If you want an affordable IH rice cooker that’s easy to maintain and consistently cooks delicious Japanese rice, the Tiger JPW-H10U is an excellent choice.
3. Zojirushi NW-JEC10BA – The Ultimate Pressure IH Rice Cooker
If you want the best Japanese rice possible, this is the rice cooker to choose.
The first time you taste rice cooked in the Zojirushi NW-JEC10BA, you’ll understand why so many Japanese people invest in a Pressure IH rice cooker. The rice is incredibly fluffy yet chewy, and every bite brings out the rice’s natural sweetness. It’s the kind of rice that makes you want a second bowl.
Unlike a standard IH rice cooker, this model combines Induction Heating (IH) with pressure cooking. The added pressure raises the boiling point of water, allowing the rice to cook at a higher temperature. This brings out the rice’s natural sweetness, rich flavor, and signature chewy texture.
Even after the rice cools, it stays soft, moist, and delicious.
🤖 2. AI Technology for Perfect Rice Every Time
The NW-JEC10BA features Advanced Fuzzy Logic with AI, which automatically adjusts the cooking process based on the type and condition of the rice. It constantly fine-tunes the temperature and cooking time, so you get consistently excellent results without any guesswork.
✨ 3. Restaurant-Quality Japanese Rice at Home
This is Zojirushi’s premium Pressure IH model, designed for people who truly love Japanese rice. If you want rice with outstanding sweetness, aroma, and a perfectly chewy texture, this rice cooker delivers an experience that’s difficult to match.
If you’re looking for the ultimate Japanese rice cooker and don’t want to compromise on taste, the Zojirushi NW-JEC10BA is worth every penny.

For Japanese meals, rice is just as important as the main dish. When the rice is delicious, the entire meal becomes even more enjoyable. But even if the side dishes are excellent, poor-quality rice can take away from the experience. That’s why I make an effort to cook the best rice possible for my family every single day. I hope this guide helps you find the perfect Japanese rice cooker and enjoy authentic Japanese rice at home.
