What do you imagine Japanese traditional food? Is there sushi, Sukiyaki, Natto or Onigiri? Yes!! As you know I’m going to share you about Japanese convenience store’s rice ball Oigiriおにぎり! I have made a lot of onigiri since now but my kids love onigiri of a convenience store not my cooking. The convenience store’s onigiri is very yummy, I understand it.

The fillings

First, we put many kinds of fillings of rice ball for example baked salmon, ツナマヨ a canned tuna with mayonnaise, エビマヨthe boiled shrimp with mayonnaise, 梅干しUme a kind of salted Japanese apricot and more.
You can cook rice ball by steamed rice that already have seasoned and mixed into some ingredients. We call it Mazegohan混ぜご飯. Usually an onigiri is seasoned with some salt but the Mazegohan rice ball doesn’t need any salt because it has already been seasoned in a steamed rice.

The shapes

There are three main shapes of rice balls, a triangle, a circle and a round column. When you bring a rice ball for lunch, it’s very useful you don’t need a lunch box you just take a rice ball wrapped in cellophane to anywhere. If the rice ball left some, you can wrap it in cellophane once more and you can eat it later! Any rice ball is very important to be eaten together with a toasted dried crispy laver.

The rice ball by a convenience store

As I mentioned, the crispy dried seaweed let a rice ball be so delicious but when I bring a homemade onigiri for lunch, the dried laver will be soft and dampish.
There is the rice ball covered with the convenience film at the supermarket or the convenience store in order to avoid the wet of laver.

Have you ever eaten this style of onigiri? It’s a kind of sushi!

First you pull out the slip on the film to the end and the film will open.

After that you can find out that some part of the dried laver is not wrapped in the film.

You move the rice on the naked seaweed like the picture and roll the rice together with the toasted laver.

All done! You just eat it! It’s easy to make and easy to eat it!
Of cause we have the triangle rice balls too!

The seaweed is wrapped in the film until when you eat so that you can taste the texture of crispy seaweed!
