Have you ever tried Japan’s oldest beer brand, Sapporo Lager Beer? Known affectionately as “Akaboshi”—which means Red Star in Japanese—this iconic brew is a rare find at most izakayas. Unlike typical draft beers, Akaboshi is a heat-treated lager, giving it a bold, nostalgic flavor that stands out from the crowd. First brewed in Hokkaido in 1877, it carries the pioneering spirit of Japan’s northern frontier in every sip.

Let’s dive into the story behind this legendary Red Star and discover why it continues to shine in Japan’s beer culture! 🍺✨

Sapporo Beer: The Legacy of the Red Star

Sapporo Lager Beer, affectionately known as Akaboshi (赤星), traces its roots back to 1877, when it was first brewed by the Kaitakushi Brewery (開拓使麦酒製造所)—the original name of what we now know as Sapporo Beer. While today’s flagship product is the Black Label, released nearly a century later, Akaboshi proudly wears a red star, symbolizing the pioneering spirit of Hokkaido and the North Star that guided early settlers.

Red Star vs. Black Label: What Sets Them Apart?

Though both beers use the same ingredients, their brewing methods create distinct personalities.

  • Akaboshi (Red Star) is heat-treated, meaning the yeast is removed through heating.
  • Black Label is non-heat-treated, using filtration instead.

This difference gives Akaboshi a bold, slightly bitter edge with a deep, satisfying richness. In contrast, Black Label offers a fresh, clean taste that’s crisp and easy to drink.

Japanese Beer Culture and Akaboshi’s Rarity

While most modern beers in Japan and abroad are non-heat-treated thanks to brewing advancements, Akaboshi remains a beloved exception. Its nostalgic depth and mellow bitterness continue to charm beer lovers across generations.

That said, it’s not easy to find. Only a handful of restaurants serve it, and spotting the red star on a menu feels like discovering a hidden gem. Luckily, canned versions have been released recently, so if you’re lucky, you might stumble upon one at a liquor shop. But even the cans are rare—so keep your eyes peeled!

Summary

When I first discovered Sapporo Lager Beer at a restaurant and took my first sip, I was shocked by how delicious it was! It tasted completely different from other beers I’d tried. Bold and rich, yet creamy—the slight bitterness was just right, making it a perfect match for greasy dishes like yakitori (grilled skewered chicken) or karaage (Japanese fried chicken).

The canned Akaboshi is also great, but if you get the chance, I really want you to try it at a restaurant. It’s a totally different experience. Or better yet, go for the bottled Akaboshi! Many restaurants serve it in bottles, so if you’re visiting Japan, don’t miss the chance to enjoy this classic Red Star at your favorite spot!
