There are four seasons in Japan, and we enjoy watching seasonal flowers that change with each season. For example, cherry blossoms are beautiful in the early spring, sunflowers are loved in summer, ginkgo trees turn golden beautifully in autumn and camellias are also grace!
In addition, we have the rainy season between spring and summer. We love watching hydrangeas in the rainy season here.
The Rainy season in Japan
Japan’s rainy season is called “Tsuyu 梅雨”. It usually begins in early June and lasts until middle of July. During the rainy season, the weather is often cloudy, humid and rainy, but it doesn’t rain all day long. Even some sunny breaks. The air feels very moist, and it’s humid all day.
Despite the dreary weather, the rainy season gives you a vivid feeling! Hydrangeas bloom beautifully during this season, and places like temples take on a quiet and misty atmosphere.
Yanagidani Temple 柳谷観音
I share one of the famous temples for beautiful hydrangeas from Kyoto. It’s Yanagidani Temple. The temple is nestled in the quiet mountains of Kyoto surrounded by nature.

At Japanese shrines and temples, there is a purification fountain where visitors rinse their hands before praying. It means to purify the body and mind. There are many hydrangeas in a purification fountain in Yanagidani temple. They are so beautiful and colorful.

There is a large bell next to the purification fountain. Visitors ring the bell before praying. It sounds is very Japanese-ish and unique. The sounds mean to purify the mind.

As you walk deeper into the temple, you can find a stone staircase beautifully lines with blooming hy temple, you can find a stone staircase beautifully lines with blooming hydrangeas. A red Torii gate stands over the hydrangeas, creating an atmospheric scene.

Hydrangeas can be found everywhere in the temple.

Furthermore, dozens of umbrellas with hydrangea-patterned are suspended in the sky, creating a beautiful blue canopy. It brings color and charm to the rainy and gray skies. It’s amazing.

Japanese-like pinwheels are lined up in a room of the temple. The room is designed to let the wind pass through easily even it’s so hot and humid so that a refreshing breeze flows through. Every time the wind blows, the spinning pinwheels bring a sense pf coolness to the air.

The outside garden in the temple is also amazing and beautiful. You can find cute Jizo statues under an umbrella.
