The Weather in Japan in June ~Rainy Season梅雨~

The weather is important for tourist. Japan has four seasons, and the temperature in summer and winter is completely different. Furthermore, even season and temperature are also different depends on the areas in Japan because Japan is long from north to south.

Japanese geography

Japan consists of four main islands and many smaller islands. The four main islands are Hokkaido北海道, Honshu本州, Shikoku四国 and Kyushu九州. Japan is a long and narrow country, and its archipelago stretches approximately 3,000 kilometers from north to south.

Honshu ~Tokyo and Osaka~

The biggest island in Japan is Honshu, and Tokyo and Osaka is located in Honshu. However, it takes 2 and half hours by Shinkansen from Tokyo to Osaka. Many tourists from overseas are enjoy staying in Honshu.
From the end of March to the middle of April, the cherry blossoms are full bloom in Honshu. It’s beautiful and just right for sightseeing.
From the middle of July to September, it’s summer and extremely hot. The temperature rises above 35℃. Moreover, it’s high humidity. People avoid going outside unless their necessary during the extremely hot days. It’s dangerous and uncomfortable.

Hokkaido

Hokkaido is located in north of Japan. It’s well known for a lot of snow in winter. And it’s not so much hot and humid in summer. Typhoons don’t hit there, and there is no rainy season in Hokkaido. Typhoons usually loss strong before reaching Hokkaido due to its cooler waters and the weakening of typhoon system as they move north.

Rainy season

There is also rainy season in Japan, and it’s translated “Tsuyu 梅雨”. It’s a unique phenomenon in Japan that occurs from June to middle of July in Japan. It’s not like a squall nor downpour. The light drizzles keep going for about one month, and it’s sometimes heavy rain. And the combination of rain and warm temperature occurs muggy, sticky weather. It’s so humid and uncomfortable. The temperature is about 27℃ or 28℃ during the rainy season. Even though it’s rainy and cloudy, you might catch a glimpse of blue sky once in a while!
The rainy season affects Honshu, Shikoku and Kyushu. It doesn’t work in Hokkaido.

Clothes

In the rainy season, you need umbrellas, raincoats and rain boots here. Furthermore, your clothes might get wet due to the rain and your sweat. It’s so humid. It might be better to bring some changing clothes in your bag.

Summary
