Japanese typical Mother’s Day

People say that Japanese are not good at making big surprise such as a romantic propose like Korean people, a grand Christmas party like western people. Japanese people are often said that we struggle to express our feelings. And we are so shy.
Japanese people usually just give carnation on Mother’s Day. Some people might give a message card as well. For my case, I have never given a message card or letter on Mother’s Day. But my mother and I get along very well. I have memories of my dad taking us to restaurant at Mother’s Day when I was young.
To mother who live far away, you send a gift which is usually carnations and Castella. The castella cake with the word “Thank you mom!” and sometimes engraved mother’s illustration on it.

A Real Mother’s Day

This story is my episode so that it’s not for every real Japanese one.
My kids had been making message cards for one week before on Mother’s Day while keeping them hidden from me, but they left them lying on the desks when they were in school.
On Mother’s Day, my kids asked me to take them to a shop to buy Mother’s Day gift. But I told them that they had better to use the money for themselves so that they got happy and tried to look for something for them! Then my husband gently advised them that they should buy a gift for me because my words were just compassions.
In the end, they bought me a handkerchief and hand cream. What do you think happened? My younger daughter couldn’t resist opening the gift and she used it first! She gave me the half-used hand cream and the message card for Mother’s Day gift!! She is so cute and kawaii.
Of course, I cooked dinner as usual on Mother’s Day.

Summary

I’ve heard that it was brought from the US to give carnations on Mother’s Day. Do you eat something special on Mother’s Day in your country? We don’t have any special meal on Mother’s Day here. Mother’s Day is not a traditional event in Japan, but I hope it gets become a more fun event here as well!
