Rice ball

Rice ball is also known as Onigiri in Japanese, and it’s made from white steamed rice formed into triangular, round, sometimes cylindrical shapes. Sushi is usually used vinegar rice, but Onigiri is made typically plain rice and covered with lightly salt. It’s often wrapped in dried seaweed and can be filled with a variety of fillings such as grilled salmon, pickled plum or tuna with mayonnaise. It’s very popular for its portability and comfortable flavor. It’s easy to cook at home and it’s sold anywhere in Japan such as convenience stores or supermarkets.

Onigiri specialty shops

You can find many onigiri specialty shops throughout Japan when you take a walk here. But it’s not difficult to cook onigiri at home. Why are there so many onigiri specialty shops these days? Because the onigiri from its specialty shop is so much delicious compared to the ordinally onigiri.

Rice

The price of rice is increasing in Japan. Furthermore, Japanese staple food is rice. It’s common in Japan to include rice in all three meals. Who want to get a gorgeous rice for every meal? We usually get a five-kilogram bag of rice in one purchase. For my family case, we use up all the rice in just one or two weeks.
However, the onigiri specialty shops can be particular about rice. They use a premium and delicious rice. It’s guaranteed to be tasty!

How to cook rice

We usually use rice cooker to cook steamed rice at home and there are so many kinds of rice cookers at an electronics store. They sell wide range race cookers from budget friendly to high end. In addition, there are a lot of information online about how to cook a delicious rice in a rice cooker. However, it’s kind of difficult for everyday people like me.
The onigiri specialty shop use a special rice cooker to cook a great rice. They cook a little firm rice in the rice cooker. And they are particular about how to shape rice into onigiri. They form the rice softly but not too soft. It keeps rice ball shape! They form the rice lightly as if letting air in. This is too hard for us!

Ingrediencies

For ordinally Japanese people, Onigiri is a light meal and cook very easily so that the ingredients often end up being quite basic. However, onigiri specialty shops line up a variety of fillings such as shrimp with mayonnaise, sukiyaki, seasoned boiled egg and more and more!

One of a typical Japanese snack is a tangy crunchy pickled plum. It has been popular from long long time ago. It could sometimes be a filling for onigiri. It’s dice into small pieces and mixed into rice. The onigiri is salty and stimulating!

Let’s check out more Onigiri information in my blog below if you’d be so kind.
