Sushi in Japan

Many people know about sushi, but I’ve heard that sushi in other countries is not like a Japanese sushi. California roll that is several ingredients like boiled shrimp or avocado is wrapped in sushi rice and dried seaweed. It originates from the United States so that it’s not traditional sushi and it’s not very common in Japan.
We also have Battleship sushi. It looks like a small battleship. It consists of a bite-sized and oval-shaped rice ball, wrapped around the side with a dried seaweed. The topping for Battleship-sushi is easily spillable such as chopped tuna or sea urchin. It’s called Gunkan-maki in Japanese.

Chirashi Sushi

We celebrate the Girl’s Festival on March 3rd. It is a Japanese traditional festival to pray for the health, growth and happiness of girls.

Japanese Girl’s Festival at the present time

A traditional Sushi called “Chirashi-sushi” is enjoyed during the Girl’s Festival.
Chirashi means scattering so that it’s also called scattered sushi.

Chirashi-sushi consists of sushi rice that is mixed rice and a little vinegar topped with several colorful ingredients such as fresh seafoods, cucumbers, omelet, or dried seaweed. Every ingredient is cut into dice to eat easily. When you eat it, spread some soy sauce and wasabi if you want. Wasabi is a traditional Japanese condiment. It’s well-known for its strong and pungent flavor.

Summary

I have no idea that Wasabi is familiar in other countries but it’s a hidden and meaningful experience in Japan for tourists. It’s spicy but not like chili. Sometimes wasabi is too spicy that tears come to your eyes automatically but it great goes well with sushi! Let’s try Wasabi with Sushi in Japan!
