There are two kinds of beer types in Japan according to the Japanese Liquor Tax Law. In brief, it’s called beer that contains malt more than 50%, it’s called low-malt beer or beer like taste beverage that contains malt less than 50%. It’s said that the standards of beer are different depends on countries.
Japanese beer
There are 4 big beer companies in Japan such as Asahi, KIRIN, SUNTORY and Sapporo. In addition, craft beer makers have been increasing these days.
There were 3 kinds of beer type before October 2023 such as the third beer. But the third beer was integrated into low-malt beer called Happosyu.

Low-malt beer
Japanese low-malt beer is more reasonable than beer. It’s called Happosyu in Japanese. It was used to be said that low-malt beer is not delicious… However, Japanese companies have made great low-malt beers these days!! Low-malt beer is smooth and can be add some flavors so that there are several kinds of tastes and aromas.

Kinmugi is one of the most famous low-malt beer in Japan and there are some types of Kinmugi such as Kinmugi lager or sugar 75% cut Kinmugi. Surprisingly, low sugar kinmugi is tasty! SUNTORY launches seasonal kinmugi.
