A rice ball is the food what foreign tourists would try when they come to Japan. There are many kinds of rice balls here. A triangle shape and covered with dried seaweed, some fillings are inside. This is a typical rice ball called Onigiri in Japanese.
Onigiri おにぎり
Japanese people often eat rice ball at lunch time or breakfast. Japanese mothers often cook rice ball, and rice balls are sold everywhere in Japan.
Put any fillings on rice, and shape the rice into triangle or circle with both hands covered some salt. Then wrap it with dried seaweed. It’s rice ball. Any rice shaped into like rice ball is rice ball. So, there are no filling rice ball or no dried seaweed rice ball.
A mixed noodle and rice Onigiri
Seven eleven Japan started to launch new rice ball ” Mixed noodle and rice Onigiri in the summer of 2024 in Japan.
First, what is the mixed noodle and rice? One of the local foods from Kansai area where is south-west of Japan is “Sobameshi”. It is like a stir-fried rice and minced noodles. It tastes soy sauce and many kinds of sauce like Okonomiyaki お好み焼き.
The mixed noodle and rice Onigiri is a rice ball made of “Sobameshi”.
It’s easy to open! Just pull the top of the wrapping. You will find a sunny side egg top on the rice. And the sunny side egg clings to the rice ball.
The rice and minced noodle are seasoned with sauce so that they are both brown colors. And the rice ball is shaped into circle. Some small cabbage is mixed into the rice. It gives you crunchy texture.
There are just right of mayonnaise between the rice ball and the sunny side egg. That’s why the sunny side egg can stay on the rice ball.
When you eat this rice ball, you may feel like you are eating several foods all at once! Rice, noodle, and Okonomiyaki!!

Japanese convenience stores have so many incredible goods! They are no longer sightseeing spots for foreign travelers. When you visit Japan, why don’t you look for an unique rice ball at a convenience store?
