When it comes to Japanese snackcs, what do you come to mind? A sweet rice cake called mochi? A Japanese traditional sweet called wagashi わがし? A rice cracker?
I recommend you to try a soft wet rice cracker!! It tastes sweet soy sauce and the texture is chewy and soft like a rice cake even it is a cracker!
Rice cracker
A rice cracker has been familiar in Japan for a very long time. It is made from rice and shapes like circle for a palm size or shapes like a very small barrel for bite size. In either case, you can take it very easily. Rice crackers are mostly baked or fried and taste soy sauce, salt or dried green seaweed. Some rice cracker is coated with granulated crystal sugar and the sugar is sometimes Japanese sour apricot flavor. It’s so much delicious!! Usually the the texture is very hard and crispy.
Soft wet rice cracker ぬれおかき
I show you a very unique rice cracker from Japan. It’s called Nure Okaki ぬれおかき in Japanese. Nure means wet and Okaki means a rice cracker. This snack is a sof wet rice cracker like a sweet rice cake as the same as the name.
It’s about the size of fat thumb, and shapes rectangle. The thickness is about 1cm.
When you tear it in to two pieces from the both saides, it’s a little hard to pull because it’s very springy.
It tastes sweet soy sauce. This product is made from Japanese rice and it’s like a savory rice cake but the out side of it is a little hard to bite. This is a rice cracker.
By the way this goods have improved the taste became law in salt by reflecting the consumer’s opinions.
Summary
A rice cracker is very common for a Japanese snack but the wet and soft rice cracker I showed is very unique and so much tasty. You may not buy nor try it outside of Japan. When you visit Japan, you need to try once!
